Insensitive

Well to start, it's been too long since I've written in this thing. I guess I just can't find time to write all my thoughts down anymore...it's become something I just do in my head now.

Anyways, with school settling in once again, I find myself continually learning, not just academically, but more on a relational level. This has been getting more and more of my attention in recent months and I've come to generalize it as a problem with the male gender. Living with 3 (7 if you count the other apartment) other guys and the way we interact with one another (especially with girls),  I see more and more howinsensitive we are and can be. Maybe its just our way of breaking the ice or getting comfortable but I've started to see it from the receiving point of view: constant "jokes" and sarcastic remarks begin to actually hurt others. Of course we don't think about them when we say these jokes, but looking at the facial expressions and body language of a few close female friends at the receiving end of a sarcastic remark often look like slaps across the face to them. I'll be the first to apologize to anyone who has been on the other end of one of my hurtful witticisms. I think I feel even more compelled to write about this because I was actually confronted about this...by the person I was "making fun" of !! And after being called out on it, it dawned on me how often I (and a lot of guys...even a few of my apt. mates were confronted) unknowingly dish out a few hurtful words. Being comfortable with a girl suddenly gave us the "right" to joke and make fun without really thinking about the consequences at hand. Flipping me off and being called an "asshole" finally made me realize what a jerk I've been.
